A course in sixteen short lessons

Automotive SPICE 4.1: the vital 20 %

The few ideas that decide most ratings, learned by using them on one project from the first lesson to a full paper assessment at the end.

Each lesson takes 10–20 minutes, teaches one idea from the primary sources, and ends with practice that gives instant feedback. Most also open with a warm-up that recalls earlier lessons. Take them in order, with one optional detour: lessons 14–16 fit right after lesson 4. Asides suggest questions for your teacher: the AI chat you are learning with. After a week, retake the warm-ups without rereading.

Lessons

  1. The two axes of a rating: processes × capability levels, N/P/L/F, and the level rule
  2. Reading a process: purpose, outcomes, base practices, information items; PA 1.1
  3. The VDA Scope: the dozen processes that get assessed
  4. Consistency and traceability: the thread through every engineering process
  5. Level 2, part 1: managing performance: PA 2.1 and process performance objectives
  6. Level 2, part 2: managing work products: PA 2.2, reviews, and AI assistants
  7. Level 3: the standard process, tailoring and deployment
  8. How assessors rate: scope, sampling, plausibility, aggregation, weakness statements
  9. Capstone: assess one team's change management from evidence to verdict

The V, process by process

Each process of the V opened up: what it asks for and the rules that decide its rating. Take these right after lesson 4, or after the rest of the course.

  1. The V at system level: SYS.1 to SYS.5, and the pattern every verification process shares
  2. The V at software level: SWE.1 to SWE.6, detailed design, and verifying against the design rather than the code
  3. Validation: VAL.1, how it differs from verification, and who performs it

Automation and AI

For teams that build or use automated engineering tooling and AI agents. Take these after the core nine.

  1. Automated checks: what a traceability checker establishes, and what it can't
  2. Lifecycles, gates and approvals: stage gates as a HOW, the records each gate should leave, SPL.2
  3. AI-generated work products: what the Guidelines say, and configuration management of the AI itself
  4. Red pen: correct a brochure full of common ASPICE mistakes

Anki decks

Every lesson has a companion deck of flashcards for spaced repetition in Anki (2.1.55 or later). Either way below, each lesson lands in its own subdeck of ASPICE 4.1, tagged by lesson. Study the parent deck, so that reviews mix all the lessons you have imported.

Both carry the same cards, so you can mix them, and importing a newer version updates the cards you already have rather than duplicating them.
